RANGE. 2017 SUMMER SMALLBORE EVENTS NOW ON
Smallbore Rifle overview:
The smallbore rifle program consists of indoor and outdoor conventional and metric prone matches. Indoor matches are generally fired on Saturday mornings at 8:30am at the Elkhart Rifle and Pistol Club. They begin in mid November and complete at the end of February. The outdoor matches start at the end of March and continue through October. The outdoor matches are generally fired on the fourth Sunday of the month at 1:30pm at the Chief Wa Ke De’ Range in Bristol. There are exceptions to this so you need to check the schedule in the match program under the smallbore rifle link.
The matches consist of 60 shots prone. Indoor is fired entirely at 50ft. Outdoor matches have three stages, 20 shots at 50 yards, 20 shots at 50meters, and 20 shots at 100 yards. These are NRA Approved matches and appropriate NRA targets are used at all ranges.
Generally shooters use a full set of equipment including a match rifle with aperture sights, shooting jacket, glove, mat, sling, spotting scope, etc. However, shooters are welcome to bring any safe smallbore rifle. Don’t let the lack of competition equipment stop you. A sweatshirt is a good substitute for a jacket, a piece of carpet for a mat. The real minimum is something to see the target when you are shooting so you can make sight adjustments. Binoculars or an inexpensive spotting scope are fine.
SJV can provide Adult and Youth target rifles and we can often find a spare spotting scope. So if you want to give it a try but are worried about equipment, don’t sweat it just contact the program chair or co-chair on the website and they’ll get you set up.
